Notes/Description

In July of 2016, CMS adopted the 2012 NFPA 101 - Life Safety Code (LSC) and the 2012 NFPA 99 - Health Care Facilities Code (HCFC). These codes establish standards of practice designed to protect people and minimize the effects of fire and related hazards. The HCFC institutes practices, specific to health care facilities that are designed to curtail hazards of fire, explosion and electricity. Survey enforcement of these codes began November 1, 2016. Is your facility on board with what’s changed? The revised survey includes more than 50 new K-tags, new surveyor forms and numerous changes to the survey process itself. Designed specifically for long-term care, this seminar will provide a comprehensive overview of changes to the survey process and clarify code requirements. Using real life examples and survey scenarios, you will explore how these codes apply to nursing facilities, discuss code changes and the increased inspection, testing and maintenance (ITM) requirements, and review common violations.

Target Audience:
This program has been designed for long-term care skilled nursing/post-acute care facility owners, corporate consultants, administrators, environmental engineers and maintenance directors.

Continuing Education:
Each identical half-day program will provide participants the opportunity to earn up to (3) three contact hours for licenced nursing home administrators.

Learner Objectives:

  • Identify significant differences between the 2000 and 2012 Life Safety and Health Care Facility Codes.
  • Review expectations regarding the ITM of required systems such as sprinklers, fire panel, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, doors, etc.
  • Discuss LSC requirements for nursing homes, including current surveyor priorities.
  • Examine LSC priorities including issues related to culture change and the environment.
  • Discuss the leading LSC deficiencies.
  • Recommend policies, standards and/or guidlines for immediate review and facility implementation.
