Purpose
The 2019 MCAL Quality Symposium will focus on workforce development and  quality improvement in the assisted living environment to achieve successful operations, workforce commitment and resident care. Education Sessions

Weed, Sex & Leave
DeAndre Harris, Kaitlin Sheets, & Brianna Richardson | Warner Norcross + Judd
Legal developments surrounding the workplace have left employers with more questions than answers these past few years. What does the new recreational marijuana law and Paid Medical Leave Act mean for employers in Michigan? What impact, if any, has the #MeToo movement had on harassment and discrimination in the workplace? In this session, we will discuss these issues and help employers remain compliant in today’s ever-changing workforce.

One Word: Collections
Margaret Chamberlain | Rolf Law
Making sure your facility receives payment for services provided is a daily challenge for nursing facilities. Services are paid for by various insurance and government programs along with the resident themselves. Each payer has different requirements for your facility to get paid – from the resident to Medicare to Medicaid and managed care health plans. This session will look at the various approaches to getting paid from these payer’s and what to do if they are not responsive to your payment requests.

Demystifying Advance Care Planning
Margaret Chamberlain | Rolf Law
Advance Directives, Guardianships, Conservatorships, Oh My! What direction to go and what do each of these entail? And more importantly, how do they affect the Advance Care Planning Process to carry out an individual’s wishes for care? Margaret Chamberlain will share insights and guidance on legal authority for decision making along with implementing Advance Care Planning.

Workforce Secrets Revealed
Cathy Sunlin, HCAM/MCAL
Workforce is a challenging topic in today’s environment and even more so in rural areas. Other industries offer increasing compensation and benefits for positions with far less responsibility and stress. How do you compete to meet the increasing needs for front line staff? Learn how the changes in our industry may affect recruitment, share best practice, and discuss tools and approaches to improve recruitment and retention.

Quality Initiatives Parts 1, 2 & 3
Linda Lawther, MCAL; Laurie Shephard, Ann McMann, Boardman Lake Glens
Linda Lawther will lead an award winning panel of providers experienced in several areas of quality improvement through use of recognized tools available from the National Center for Assisted Living, Michigan Center for Assisted Living and other resources.
The panel will explore the NCAL Quality Initiatives, Trend Tracker, the Assisted Living Cost Calculator as well as the many tools that lead to positive outcomes in the QI process. The panel will also share awards received and the process for attaining these awards and recognition including the impact the award process had on their communities. Panel members may include Laurie Shepard, Ann McMann and Yolanda Pope.

Rules and Statutes Updates for HFA and AFC – includes Exempt Communities
Jay Calewarts, LARA
Jay Calewarts, Licensing Director for HFA and AFC will present an update on HFA and AFC administrative rules and statutes (laws). While rules and laws go through changes, providers are not always aware of the latest or the reasons for changes that occur. Background check costs, exemption from licensure, license renewal costs are just a few examples of items that will be covered in this session. This is a great opportunity for Q & A on the issues providers are facing every day with renewal inspections as well as special investigations.

HR Speed Sessions
Laurie Shephard
Laurie Shepard will lead participants in a series of quick idea sharing in the area of recruitment and retention. These “TED style” presentations will give participants an opportunity to experience several options that could be implemented in their own settings. Participants will also have a chance to share their own ideas and best practices.
