Grandvue Holds Groundbreaking for Greenhouse

Posted: 07.12.16

The Elders, staff and Board of Grandvue Medical Care Facility hosted a ceremonial groundbreaking on Thursday, July 7 to initiate the first phase of the Grandvue Terrace and Recreation Park project.  Construction will begin in July to erect a 24’ X 30’ greenhouse attached to the facility’s Horizonvue memory care community.

Construction will consist of two components:  a building expansion and the addition of the Grandvue Greenhouse.  The building expansion will incorporate adding office space, upgrading and housing the electrical system for the Horizonvue community and adding a much needed restroom.

The Grandvue Greenhouse will allow the facility to explore horticultural therapy and move forward in its Eden journey by finding new ways to eliminate loneliness, helplessness and boredom from Elders’ lives.  Studies have shown that “horticultural therapy helps clients learn new skills and regain lost skills.  It is a restorative technique to improve memory, attention, sense of responsibility and social interaction with few to no adverse side effects.  Horticultural therapy has also been found to reduce stress, to increase feelings of calm and relaxation, to foster a sense of accomplishment and to improve self-esteem.”  (Psychiatry Investigation, June 2012).

The greenhouse will be climate controlled for use all four seasons.  It will provide more opportunities for families, students and volunteers to get involved with Grandvue’s Elders.  Funding for the greenhouse and the rest of the Terrace and Park project was raised by the Terrace and Park Fundraising Committee through the D-I-G (Donations, In-Kind support and Grants) Campaign.  The greenhouse project is scheduled for completion in October.

Members of the community including representatives of the Charlevoix County Community Foundation, Malpass Foundation, Grand Traverse Construction and the Terrace and Park Fundraising Committee were in attendance for the groundbreaking celebration.
