Grandvue, Charlevoix County’s Medical Care Facility, Celebrates Ground Breaking

Posted: 05.07.19

Residents, families, Board members, care partners, donors and members of the Charlevoix County community joined together on Friday, May 10, to celebrate the ground breaking of the Grandvue Terrace and Recreation Park, a project nearly 15 years in the making.

Grandvue, a 113-bed facility, has been serving Charlevoix County since 1891. The current physical plant opened in 1958, with subsequent renovation and expansion projects over the years. Although the latest improvement project, completed in 2005, brought Residents a higher level of privacy and dignified living, access to outdoor recreation remains limited to enclosed courtyards and narrow porches. Residents who would like to walk and exercise outside are limited to sidewalks adjoining the parking lot.

“The Terrace and Recreation Park began as a dream—the dream of a healing environment that will promote physical, mental and spiritual health for all who visit. The park will include the addition of several walking paths with sitting areas, a family picnic pavilion, accessible gardens and a children’s playground. Once completed, the Park will become a tremendous community asset serving generations of families by providing opportunities for families to stay connected in meaningful ways,” says Grandvue Administrator Carol Timmer.

The Grandvue Greenhouse, the first phase of the Grandvue Terrace and Recreation Park project, opened its doors in October 2016. Attached to the Horizonvue Memory Care Community, this 24’ X 30’ greenhouse is accessible to families and Residents year round. It is a unique space filled with light, plants and warmth. The main Terrace and Recreation Park will expand on Grandvue’s effort to have a positive impact on health and well-being by further integrating nature into the lives of Residents.

The Grandvue family of supporters has demonstrated tremendous commitment to ensure the dream of the Terrace and Recreation Park becomes a reality, achieving the $550,000 fundraising goal in late 2018. This is a true community project with individuals, foundations, businesses and service organizations contributing funding, time and materials to its success.
