Presenters will also discuss the conversations on Capitol Hill to greatly expand the number of states pursuing Medicare-Medicaid integration.

Bureau Fire Services: What to Expect When Being Inspected and Submitting Projects for Plan Review

This session will provide a brief overview of the Bureau of Fire Services, followed by a detailed brief on some of the pitfalls and best practices for submitting plans for review. Reimbursement Updates

Presenter: Jon Lanczak and Rob Long

This session provide an overview of current industry trends from a finance and reimbursement perspective and will discuss the changes in current and future Michigan Medicaid reimbursement environment and provide insight on the potential change to the current Medicaid cost based reimbursement system, and the impact that it may have on SNF operators. It will also cover the FY 2023 update to Medicare reimbursement, the Patient-Driven Payment Model, and the Value-Based Purchasing Program (VBP). Further, it will discuss the impact of the growth in managed care utilization and market penetration and review State and regional managed care utilization and market penetration data.

Nurse Learner Outcome: At the conclusion of this session, participants will self-report on the post session evaluation, a knowledge gain of the current Medicaid reimbursement environment in Michigan as well as potential changes to a new acuity-based system and how each may impact operations and care in LTC.

Bureau of Survey and Certification State Survey Agency Updates

Presenter: Jennie Belden

In the fall of 2022, LARA separated state and federal functions within the department to increase bureau capacity in order to identify efficiencies and improve program oversight. The newly formed Bureau of Survey and Certification aims to cultivate a collaborative culture and engage stakeholders to develop innovative approaches to addressing issues that impact nursing homes. This presentation will provide updates on new developments within the bureau, changes in CMS guidance, as well as provide opportunity to shared dialogue on identifying future projects.

Nurse Learner Outcome: At the conclusion of this session, participants will self-report a knowledge gain of the recent reorganization of LARA and its impact on providers including changes in practice on the post-event evaluation.

Learner Objectives:

  1. Discuss the recent bureau reorganization in LARA and its impact on providers.
  2. Review changes in practice that will promote collaboration between the bureau and facility administrators.
  3. Engage in dialogue identifying future projects for the newly formed Bureau of Survey and Certification.

HFA and AFC Regulatory Updates

Presenter: Andrea Moore and Mickey Streeter

Participants will gain information on some of the proposed changes for AFC and HFA that are in the works and be given an opportunity to provide feedback now before changes are implemented. Presenters will discuss commonly cited rule violations in both AFC and HFA facilities and the AFC Division/Long-Term-Care State Licensing Sections’ plan to work with providers to achieve and maintain compliance with those rules commonly cited.

Nurse Learner Outcome: At the conclusion of this session, participants will self report on the post session evaluation, a knowledge gain of proposed changes to HFA and AFC regulations and how to maintain compliance with administrative licensing rules.

Learner Objectives:

  1. Identify changes to administrative licensing rules for both AFC and HFA.
  2. Examine the combination of all five AFC rule sets (family, small group, medium group, large group, and congregate homes).
  3. Review commonly cited rule violations in both AFC and HFA facilities.
  4. Discuss the redesign of the Health Facility Licensing, Permits, and Support Division’s website and forms.

Humanoid Robots in Dementia & Elderly Care

Presenter: Dr. Arshia Khan

In this session, Dr. Arshia Khan will share innovative robotic and sensor based technologies that have shown to help improve dementia and elderly care in nursing homes. We will explore the ability of robots to address social, physical and cognitive concerns in elderly and people affected with dementia. Robots are helping staff out by socializing and entertaining the residents of nursing homes in Minnesota. Psychological Benefits (Including Pain Reduction) of Nature Exposure

Presenter: Dr. Jon Barch

Health care professionals need all the tools they can get when trying to boost people’s immune systems, positive emotions, and parasympathetic nervous system activity while decreasing negative emotions and the experience of pain. While it is not typically the first tool we reach for, most of us intuitively feel that nature experiences give us happiness, relaxation, and that they can be restorative when it comes to coping with life’s many stressors including workplace burnout. This presentation will explore the science behind those effects and share research into the value of adding nature experiences in healthcare settings. Specifically, you will gain a deeper appreciation for the therapeutic value of nature exposure for reducing a wide range of ill-health symptomatology (pain, stress, negative emotion) and facilitating measurable increases in well-being (parasympathetic nervous system activity, positive emotion, attentional capacity, immune system functioning). This educational presentation reviews scientific evidence and theories explaining these effects.

Nurse Learner Outcome: At the conclusion of this session, participants will self-report a knowledge gain of the connection between nature exposure and human wellness using scientific theory on the post-event evaluation.

Learner Objectives:

  1. Discuss connections between psychological experiences and physiological health benefits of nature exposure.
  2. Differentiate biophilia and attentional restoration as theoretical explanations for the wellness benefits of nature exposure.
  3. Describe research-based examples of how nature exposure provides humans with health benefits.
  4. Identify ways to improve clients’ wellness by increasing nature exposure in healthcare settings.

Implicit Bias in LTC
