CMS Releases Additional Updates to MDS (SNF)

On December 3, 2022, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released the full version set of the Minimum Data Set (MDS) 3.0.v1.18.11. Last fall, CMS released the comprehensive data set, followed now by the full set along with a change document providing a cross walk identifying which MDS items are contained in each item set. 

To view the updated data sets as well as the change document you can access the zip file from the CMS MDS webpage in the download section. Be advised, that although formally released, CMS still has the file labeled draft. 

Of note, with the elimination of Section G, CMS has not yet shared how the quality measures and Five Star calculations using Section G data will be made. Additional information and technical specifications will be forthcoming to address those changes, most likely within the updated Resident Assessment Index (RAI) Manual. CMS is expected to release the updated RAI Manual during the second quarter of 2023. We will share links to the updated manual when released.
