MI Choice Provider Monitoring (SNF/AL)

During the public health emergency (PHE), the state placed restrictions on access to adult foster care, homes for the aged, assisted living communities, and nursing facilities regarding where MI Choice participants may reside or receive MI Choice services. MI Choice waiver agencies have contract and policy requirements to conduct monitoring activities with providers, but the access restrictions made this difficult to do in person during the PHE. Numbered Letter L 20-39, released June 25, 2020, instructed waiver agencies to continue to conduct provider monitoring responsibilities to the extent possible while complying with the restrictions imposed by the state.

As the PHE ends, and access restrictions for these facilities are no longer in place, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is rescinding the guidance offered in Numbered Letter L 20-39. Effective May 12, 2023, MI Choice waiver agencies will be required to resume normal operations for provider monitoring as outlined in the MI Choice contract and policy, including any in-person methods for completing these requirements.
