On March 20, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) hosted a webinar on Medicaid Coverages for Durable Medicaid Equipment (DME) in Nursing Facilities. The presentation included a discussion on what DME is and is not included as part of a facility per diem.

Included in per diem (not an exhaustive list):

  • Hospital beds
  • Enteral formulas
  • Standard manual wheelchairs
  • Surgical dressings/bandages (some exceptions)
  • Diabetic test strips

Not included in per diem (not an exhaustive list):

  • Parenteral nutrition/supplies
  • Power wheelchairs
  • Manual wheelchairs with custom seating
  • Prosthetic limbs
  • Speech generating devices

The presentation also discussed the process of obtaining authorization for power wheelchairs and manual wheelchairs with custom seating, as well as obtaining DME in a transition from a skilled nursing facility to the community. The presentation PowerPoint, which includes applicable contact information, is now available.
