Governor Appoints Velez to Certificate of Need Commission

Governor Gretchen Whitmer appointed Daniel Velez, vice president of operations for Nexcare Wellbridge Senior Living, to the state’s Certificate of Need (CON) Commission on April 11. His appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate. Velez has been with Nexcare Wellbridge for over nine years, starting as a regional clinical director. With bachelor’s in nursing from West Visayas State University and a master’s in nursing from Western Governors University, he is an RN and licensed nursing home administrator. Velez is appointed to represent nursing homes and independents for a term that runs April 11, 2024 to April 9, 2027. Daniel succeeds Don Haney, who retired after nearly 17 years as Thornapple Manor administrator.

The Certificate of Need Commission is responsible for developing, approving, disapproving or revising CON Review Standards that are used by the CON Program Section to issue decisions on Certificate of Need applications. The commission evaluates the Review Standards for modification on a three-year rotating schedule as identified in the commission work plan. The commission also has the authority to make recommendations to revise the list of covered clinical services subject to CON review.
