Alert: CMS Identifies Medicare Fraud Scheme Involving Phishing Fax Requests

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) identified a fraud scheme targeting Medicare providers and suppliers. Per a recent MLN Connects Newsletter, scammers are impersonating CMS officials and sending phishing fax requests for medical records and documentation, falsely claiming to be part of a Medicare audit. 

Providers should inform front office staff and personnel responsible for responding to claim audit requests that CMS doesn’t initiate audits by requesting medical records via fax. To protect your organization’s and your resident’s financial and health information, do not respond if you receive a suspicious request. If you think you received a fraudulent or questionable request, contact your Medical Review Contractor to confirm its validity.
