COVID Public Health Emergency Likely to Continue (SNF/AL)
The Biden Administration indicated it will renew the current COVID-19 Public Health Emergency (PHE) which was declared on October 13, 2022. It is set to expire on January 11, 2023. However, the Administration committed to giving states 60 days’ notice before letting a COVID-19 Public Health Emergency expire. That 60-day mark was Friday, November 11, and it passed without notice – suggesting that the Administration intends to renew the COVID-19 PHE in January.
The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) initially declared a COVID-19 Public Health Emergency in January 2020. Each declaration of a PHE is good for 90 days. To date, HHS has always renewed the PHE before its expiration date, which means that the nation has remained in a Public Health Emergency since the original declaration.
