Draft MDS 3.0 Item Sets Available (SNF)

The draft Minimum Data Set (MDS) 3.0 Item Sets version (v)1.18.11 are now available in the Downloads section on the Minimum Data Set (MDS) 3.0 Resident Assessment Instrument (RAI) Manual page. CMS plans to release the final version of the MDS Item Sets in early 2023. The MDS Item Sets v1.18.11 will be effective beginning October 1, 2023.

Revisions include the following:

• Section G has been removed.
• Two G items (functional limitation in range of motion and mobility devices) were retained in section GG.
• Addition of the Transfer of Health Information Quality Reporting Program quality measures data items.
• Addition of MDS items to accommodate the additional Standardized Patient Assessment data elements.
• Patient Health Questionnaire, PHQ-9, changed to the PHQ 2-9.
• N0410: Medications Received, has been removed and replaced with N0415: High Risk Drug Classes.
• N0415 has an expanded medication list and includes an indication for use column.

In addition, the December update of Appendix B to the RAI 3.0 User’s Manual contains changes to the list of State RAI Coordinators, MDS Automation Coordinators, RAI Panel members, and CMS locations and contacts. This file is also located in the Downloads section of the MDS webpage.
