Meet Senator Sylvia Santana Senate Appropriations Committee Chair

Sylvia Santana is serving her second term in the Michigan Senate. Before that, she served two terms in the Michigan House of Representatives. Senator Santana has focused her efforts on reforming the state’s justice system for adults and juveniles. She has also championed improvements to local government funding, increased funding to Michigan’s public schools, and continues to work on policies that reduce racial disparities in health outcomes.

The senator represents the 2nd District, which encompasses all of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights and parts of Allen Park and Detroit. She is proud of the many cultures across the district and is deeply invested in efforts toward equity for women of color as it relates to businesses, health care and more.

Majoring in finance at Eastern Michigan University, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business.

As Chair of the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) Appropriations Subcommittee and Vice Chair of the Senate Health Policy Committee, Senator Santana will address issues affecting skilled nursing facilities and assisted living communities throughout the legislative term.
