Member Update and Call to Action – Earned Sick Time Act and Minimum Wage (SNF/AL)

Update: The Michigan Senate Regulatory Affairs Committee held a hearing today, February 5, to consider two bills that aim to fix the problematic Earned Sick Time Act and the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act, both of which take effect February 21, 2025. Senate Bill 8 and SB 15 make amendments to these acts to help address unintended consequences for employers and employees. The Michigan House of Representatives passed their fixes to the acts in House Bill 4001 and HB 4002 on January 23. The House and Senate are expected to conduct negotiations to reconcile the differences in the bill packages.

While this is positive news, there is a real possibility the Legislature won’t pass the bills prior to the February 21 deadline. To prepare for this, providers should review the requirements of the acts and begin to update internal policies accordingly.
