Non-Emergency Transfers (SNF/AL)

As staffing shortages continue across the healthcare continuum, be advised that requests for non-emergency ambulance transfers may be delayed for several hours, or declined when emergency runs take precedence. Emergency Management Services (EMS) providers are prioritizing call response at times of limited response availability. Though the response may take longer than usual, please do not call 911 for non-emergency transfers.

To ensure that EMS services are available when truly needed members can take several actions:

  • Consider all options when faced with non-emergent needs; consulting with medical providers on treatments or services that could be offered in house, alternative transport options when available, or telehealth consultations, among other options
  • Ensure the resident agrees with a recommended transport to the hospital prior to contacting the ambulance service when clinical condition allows
  • Avoid raising the priority of a transport request unless clinical conditions dictate.
  • Avoid calling for assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADL) support
