TNA Transition Waiver (SNF)
The association was notified late yesterday that the Department of Licensing & Regulatory Affairs (LARA) DENIED our request for a state-wide temporary nurse aide (TNA) extension waiver on behalf of Michigan’s temporary aides and long term care providers. LARA will not be submitting a state-wide waiver request to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
What can you do now? CMS has made it clear that individual facilities may apply for a waiver extension independently. If you have staff members working as a TNA who continue to face barriers to transitioning to CNA status, we urge you to submit a waiver request to CMS on behalf of your individual facility.
Individual facility waiver requests should include the following information:
When there are localized barriers to training/testing in a state or county not otherwise covered by a waiver, facilities may request a waiver by providing documentation of the barriers. The documentation must include information demonstrating that the aide(s) have attempted to become certified (e.g., enrollment in training or testing), but the NATCEP entity cannot accommodate the applicant(s) at this time.
- Documentation should include the date(s) and contact(s) that the communication occurred between.
- Documentation can be in the form of email, letters, or documentation of a phone call.
- Documentation must show timely contacts to state officials.
- Facilities should include the estimated date by which their aides will get certified.
Submit requests through the Waiver Request Portal.
