Michigan’s 2026 Gubernatorial and U.S. Senate Election Update (SNF/AL)
Michigan will hold an election for a new governor and U.S. Senator in November 2026. For the first time in decades, an incumbent will not be running for either seat, making for an eventful and competitive election cycle. While the general election will not take place for another 19 months, several individuals have already announced their candidacy.
Governor’s Race
With current Governor Gretchen Whitmer termed out of office at the end of 2026, Michigan will elect a new governor next year. Three prominent Republican politicians have announced their candidacy so far:
- Aric Nesbitt – Michigan Senate Minority Leader
- John James – U.S. Congressman
- Mike Cox – Former Attorney General of the State of Michigan
Three Democrat politicians have announced their candidacy:
- Jocelyn Benson – Michigan Secretary of State
- Garlin Gilchrest – Michigan Lieutenant Governor
- Chris Swanson – Genessee County Sheriff
One independent candidate has announced:
- Mike Duggan – Detroit Mayor
U.S. Senate Race
Current Democratic Senator Gary Peters announced his retirement, which opens his U.S. Senate seat for the 2026 election cycle. Thus far, only two candidates have announced they are running for that seat:
- Republican Mike Rogers – Former U.S. Congressman
- Democrat Mallory McMorrow – Current Michigan State Senator
The list will grow considerably in the coming weeks for both races. HCAM will closely monitor the races and engage as appropriate during the election cycle.
