Nursing Home Screening Update (SNF)

On behalf of the Bureau of Community and Health Systems within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, we would like to inform you during a recent CMS call with the survey state agencies, the new CMS QSO 20-39-NH (revised 11-12-21) was discussed. While the QSO memo does not specifically address how to maintain entrance screening for visitors, staff, volunteers, contractors, etc., CMS did verbally emphasize that a screening method must be in place for visitors and staff to achieve “Core Principles of COVID-19 Infection Prevention”. Individuals who have a positive viral test for COVID-19, symptoms of COVID-19, or currently meet the criteria for quarantine should not enter the facility and the provider should have a screening method to assure visitors and staff are aware of this criteria. The screening method does not require the provider to actively man the screening station but the screening results should be reviewed periodically during the day.

Again, one of the core principles of infection prevention is an effective screening method.  If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you

Michelle
