New Social Security Administration Security Authentication Process

As of April 15, 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) requires certain claimants to complete a Security Authentication PIN process for phone or in-person changes to account information, including direct deposit updates. These changes aim to prevent fraud but may pose challenges for facilities that assist residents in managing their SSA benefits. Notably:

  • Facilities using Resident Fund Management Service (RFMS) are unlikely to be affected, as SSA confirms that normal electronic enrollment remains in place and that authorization of the payee (not necessarily Rep Payee designation) is sufficient.
  • Delays may arise for facilities not using RFMS, especially where Organizational Rep Payee status must be newly established or when SSA field office capacity is limited.
  • Facilities using alternative accounting systems may wish to evaluate their readiness to manage increased manual processes.
