Updated NHA Licensing Rules Expected Soon (SNF)
The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) Bureau of Professional Licensing regularly reviews the rules regarding Nursing Home Administrator (NHA) licensing, with new rules expected to take effect in the coming weeks. The new rules include the following updates to the education and testing necessary to be eligible for an NHA license:
- R339.14012 – Beginning 1 year after promulgation of this rule, an applicant for licensure must have earned either of the following from an accredited college or university that satisfies the requirements of R339.14011: (1) The applicant must hold a valid, active license as a registered nurse and an associate degree or higher in nursing OR (2) the applicant must have a bachelor’s degree.
- The rule also includes subjects required to be part of the NHA training, such as administrative and financial management of a nursing home.
- R339.14014 – The board will approve and adopt the NAB CORE and the NAB NHA LOS examinations developed, administered and scored by the NAB or its successor organization.
Please note: These new rules do not apply to current NHA license holders. They only apply to new applicants who apply after 1 year of the effective date of the rules. Read the final rule language and track its progress here.
